"None shall pass."
―A Laser Master's last words before his final stand in a later episode of Laser Masters[1]

Laser Masters was a program that Imperial officer Canonhaus loved watching as a child before[2] the Galactic Empire's founding in 19 BBY.[1] Canonhaus had hazy memories of the show, which he remembered as if from another reality and thought that it would not be approved by the Empire's Commission for the Preservation of the New Order.[2]

In one of the later episodes of Laser Masters, the Senate chamber was defended by a Laser Master from an army of monsters, and before his final stand, the Master uttered "none shall pass" as his last words. The Laser Master's last words remained in Canonhaus' mind as his Imperial Star Destroyer traversed the Hoth asteroid belt as part of Death Squadron[2] in 3 ABY,[1] hoping that none of the asteroid fragments would penetrate his ship's deflector shields. However, during Canonhaus' holographic meeting with Darth Vader and other Death Squadron commanding officers, an asteroid flew into Canonhaus' Star Destroyer, obliterating its bridge and killing the officer.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"There are thousands of warriors out here. You are only one man!"
"I am only one Jedi."
"You're insane!"
"No. I am Ganner. This threshold is mine. I claim it for my own. Bring on your thousands, one at a time or all in a rush. I don't give a damn. None shall pass."
―Nom Anor and Ganner Rhysode[3]

Laser Masters was mentioned in the short story "The Final Order," written by Seth Dickinson and published in 2020 as part of the book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back.[2] The actions of the Laser Master Canonhaus recalled is a reference[source?] to Jedi Knight Ganner Rhysode defending the Senate Building on Coruscant from the Yuuzhan Vong in the 2002 Star Wars Legends novel The New Jedi Order: Traitor, written by Matthew Stover, where the Jedi single-handedly withstood scores of Vong invaders led by Nom Anor, claiming that "none shall pass" before making his sacrifice.[3]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 "The Final Order" — From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back takes place in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Hoth, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 3 ABY. Therefore, the short story must have also taken place in 3 ABY. Since the story establishes that Canonhaus watched Laser Masters before the time of the Galactic Empire, and Star Wars: Galactic Atlas places the Empire's founding in 19 BBY, Laser Masters must have been released by that year.
  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 "The Final Order" — From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back
