A laser turret was a turret-mounted laser weapon equipped on certain types of attack vehicles, both ground-based attackers and starfighters. Imperial Troop Transports featured dorsal twin laser turrets.[1] The KX4 dorsal laser turret was a specialized type of laser turret made by Taim & Bak.[2]
Types[]
Remote-controlled turrets[]
Some Spaceships featured smaller turrets mounted on their hull for either point-defense purposes[3] or as their main armament;[4] the former were specifically classed as point-defense laser cannons.[3] These smaller weapons couldn't fit a gunner or maintenance personnel inside them and were instead controlled remotely, either from the ship's bridge[5] or by a gunner seated in a dedicated firing position underneath the weapon. This technology, known as a gunner station featured screens which allowed the gunner to see what they were shooting at such as a targeting computer and sometimes rotated with the turret to provide a sense of direction to the gunner. Occasionally, the turret's position and the necessity of the gunner station to be directly below it led to the seat being suspended upside down.[4]
Manned turrets[]
Larger capital ships were equipped with larger, heavier weapons. These were manned by large firing crews and oftentimes included separate sections dedicated to targeting, power generation or monitoring and firing. These larger weapons were generally more powerful and accurate than their smaller counterparts due to their more complex systems.[6]
