Liberation Day was a day of celebration organized by the New Republic to mark the liberation of former Rebel Alliance prisoners from Ashmead's Lock prison on Kashyyyk. The name was suggested by the New Republic's Chancellor Mon Mothma and approved by the senate. It was meant to dovetail with the peace talks between Chancellor Mothma and the Galactic Empire's Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, that were to be held in Hanna City on the planet Chandrila.[1]
Liberation Day saw the streets of Hanna City filled with various cultural and musical events. The festivities of the day halted when the Ashmead's Lock prisoners, who were under the influence of controller chips, mysteriously and involuntarily attempted to assassinate New Republic leaders in an Imperial plot orchestrated by Gallius Rax. Mon Mothma and Kyrsta Agate were injured, while Hostis Ij, Crix Madine and others were rumored to be dead.[1]
Following the defeat of the Galactic Empire at the Battle of Jakku, Liberation Day was remade into the seven-day Festival of Liberation in line with the New Republic's policy of encouraging celebrations of joy in contrast to the somber Imperial parades.[3]
