A listening device also known as a recording device was a surveillance and spying device used to eavesdrop on private conversations. They were designed to be difficult to find, and hidden in locations in order to record their targets.[1]
History[]
Rebel operatives Luthen Rael and Kleya Marki made frequent use of listening devices in their secret war against the Galactic Empire as part of the Axis network. One such device was planted in the Tinian Codex, an ancient artifact that was given to the oligarch Davo Sculdun. Installed in Sculdun's gallery, the device allowed Axis to eavesdrop on several conversations, including those that implicated Imperial Security Bureau Colonel Wullf Yularen and Grand Vizier Mas Amedda with Sculdun's schemes. The presence of the device in a scrutinized gallery eventually became a liability, however, forcing Marki to discreetly dismantle the device at a Senate Investiture party[2] in 3 BBY.[3]
In 3 ABY,[4] a member of Crimson Dawn planted a listening device at a table frequented by members of the Pyke Syndicate in Makal's Gambling Parlor in Mirogana on the moon Toshara. After placing the device, the Crimson Dawn enforcer struck up a conversation with a Pyke at the table and eventually got him talking about the syndicates, next spice shipment. The enforcer was unable to retrieve the listening device with the Pyke eyeing her.[5]
During the same year,[4] the scoundrel Kay Vess overheard the enforcer reciting the story to a fellow Crimson Dawn member. Vess later decided to retrieve the device herself. When the Pyke noticed her pull something from the table, Vess had the opportunity to reveal the existence of the device to the Pyke member, thus gaining favor with the syndicate or to lie to the Pyke and return the device to the Dawn, thus gaining favor with the Dawn.[5]
