Lizard-toad-snake was a two-player hand game in which each participant played either "lizard," "toad," or "snake," resulting in one of four possible outcomes. It was played during the Age of the Empire among youth on Jelucan, a planet in the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy. Humans Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree of Jelucan often played lizard-toad-snake to determine who would pilot the Kyrell family's airspeeder.
Description[]
Lizard-toad-snake was a hand game played between two individuals who, at the count of three, formed one of three shapes with an outstretched hand. The three shapes were "lizard," "toad," and "snake." Other than a tie, the game had three possible outcomes: A player who decided to play lizard would beat another player who had chosen snake but would lose to one who played toad, while a play of toad would lose to a play of snake. Each play was accompanied by a phrase such as "lizard ate snake" or "snake ate toad" to signify the winner. Due to the random nature of the game, players attributed the outcomes to luck.[1]

During the Age of the Empire, lizard-toad-snake was played by youth on Jelucan, a planet in the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy.[1] In 6 BBY,[2] two thirteen-year-old Jelucani humans, Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree, a male and female, respectively, often played lizard-toad-snake to determine who would pilot the Kyrell family's V-171 airspeeder.[1]
Years later, during the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic, Kyrell and Ree became members of the opposing factions.[1] In 3 ABY,[2] the two returned to their homeworld when Ree's mother, Verine, was arrested on false allegations of embezzlement. Due to the unexpected situation and their romantic feelings for each other, the two formed a temporary truce and, out of habit, played lizard-toad-snake, taking to the skies once more.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Lizard-toad-snake is derived from the real-world game of rock-paper-scissors and appeared in the canon young-adult novel Lost Stars, which was written by Claudia Gray and published in 2015 on Force Friday.[1] Another interpretation of rock-paper-scissors, Desert Draw, previously appeared in the 2003 Star Wars Legends video game Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided.[3]
