This article is about the canon Republic cruiser. You may be looking for the similar-looking Legends Axehead frigate.

The Longbeam cruiser[1] was a type of cruiser utilized by the Galactic Republic, a brand-new design at the time of the Great Hyperspace Disaster during the High Republic Era. They were multi-purpose craft that could be used for combat, search and rescue, transport, or other purposes. Longbeams were constructed at the Republic shipyards on Hosnian Prime. Their shape reminded Nautolan Captain Finial Bright of the hammerfish of Glee Anselm: a blunt "skull" tapering into a sinuous shape reminiscent of a tailfin. Longbeam armaments included a total of six missiles. Many of the ships, including Bright's Aurora IX, were used during the Republic and Jedi effort to save the Hetzal system during the Great Disaster.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The Longbeam cruiser was created for the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project, making its debut in Charles Soule's short story "Starlight: Go Together," the first part of which was published in the Star Wars Insider magazine's 199th issue on December 15, 2020.[3] Prior to its release, the ship was introduced in "Inside Star Wars: The High Republic: Meet the Ships and Vehicles," an article by Dan Brooks published on StarWars.com on December 11 of that year. The design was previously[4] an unused design for the MG-100 StarFortress SF-17 heavy bomber created for the 2017 sequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, by James Clyne.[5]
