Plot summary[]

The protagonist Parlan Spinner and the Keshiri crew aboard the Southern Star pledge their allegiance to the Dark Jedi Baron Remulus Dreypa, who had been imprisoned for four thousand years within an oubliette. The Sith princess Takara Hilts and the Doomed's leader Kaliska are imprisoned below the ship's deck. The Southern Star sails back to Keshtah Minor and land at the port of Eorm. Spinner contemplates the consequences of his ancestor Ermon Parrah's actions on his descendants including himself. Millennia earlier, Parrah who rebelled against the Lost Tribe of Sith's leadership and attempted to return to the stars. As punishment, Parrah and his descendants were condemned to outcasts in Sith society. Spinner was the only person in his line to reject this servitude and to seek his own destiny.

Dreypa uses his Force powers to take over the town of Eorm and slays the tyrannical local Sith Lord Galathos and his men. Dreypa's Force abilities awe the local villagers who rally around the ancient Dark Jedi. Dreypa intends to return to the stars and reluctantly agrees to lead the slaves in a rebellion against the Tribe's leadership in Tahv. Meanwhile, Takara and Kaliska manage to escape and steal the town's entire herd of uvaks, winged reptilian beasts used as steeds on Kesh. They return to Eshkrene where they bring the entire Doomed community to confront Dreypa's dark side powers.

In Keshtah Minor, Dreypa's forces clash with the Tribe's army at the Marisota Floodplain. Despite initial successes, they suffer heavy casualties at the hands of the Tribe's elite Skyborn Rangers. Dreypa's forces retreat to the Sessal Spire, a volcanic crater on the southeastern edge of Keshtah Minor. The Tribe's army led by Grand Consort Iliana Hilts, the husband of Grand Lord Varner Hilts catch up with them. However, Dreypa uses his talisman to summon several hibernating Leviathan—serpentine Sithspawn capable of devouring life energies—from the crater.
