Luggabeasts were a non-sentient quadruped species that lived in the galaxy. They were found on frontier worlds, their masks were fused permanently onto their faces, and mechanical invasive systems enhanced their durability and working capabilities to well beyond their natural abilities. They did not require food or water, as nutrients were fed directly into them via wires. In the decades following the Battle of Endor, luggabeasts could be found on the desert world of Jakku, where the Teedo population used the beasts for scavenging. To help locate droids and other valuables, the Teedos gave the creatures cybernetic implants such as armor or optical instruments.[1] By the time of the cold war, a Teedo and his luggabeast captured BB-8, a BB unit, before it was set free by Rey, another scavenger.[3]

Behind the scenes

Luggabeasts were first revealed in an article published by Entertainment Weekly which contained exclusive photos from Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[4] Prior to the film's release, luggabeasts were added to Star Wars: Commander, a mobile game, in an Episode VII-themed update.[5] As a nod to the movie, the Star Wars Legends video game Star Wars: The Old Republic added its own version of the luggabeast as a mount in October 2016; the "Scavenger's Luggerwahl" was first made available as part of the Manipulator Alliance Pack. It was controlled by two puppeteers: Derek Arnold and Tom Wilton.
