Lupita Nyong'o (born March 1, 1983)[1] is a Kenyan–Mexican actress, who portrayed Maz Kanata in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and in Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi through motion capture. She is also known for playing Patsey in the 2013 drama film 12 Years a Slave, Nakia in the 2018 superhero film Black Panther, and its 2022 sequel; and the leading role in the 2019 horror film Us.
Nyong'o's involvement was first announced on June 2, 2014.[2] In Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, she vocally reprised the role of Maz Kanata, while the character's physical appearance was realized through an animatronic puppet rather than motion capture.[3]
