M5-R3 was an R-series astromech droid[2] manufactured by Industrial Automaton.[1] It had red, black and white paneling and an R5 dome with a black sensor.[3] In 34 ABY[4] during the occupation of the planet Batuu by the First Order, M5-R3 was present in Black Spire Outpost. The droid spent time waiting for an oil bath in the Service Yard droid repair station of the outpost's Droid Depot while the astromech droid[3] S2-M8 used the bath.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

M5-R3 appeared as a prop within the themed land Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge,[3] which opened to guests at Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios Park in 2019.[5]

Notes and references[edit | edit source]

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded states that all R-series astromech droids are manufactured by Industrial Automaton. Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia states that all astromech droids are second class droids. As Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge establishes that M5-R3is an R-series astromech droid, these characteristics must also apply to it.
  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 Service Yard has official backstory elements that, while not directly published for the public, are officially canon details that can be obtained verbally from cast members working in the area.

  4. The Star Wars Book dates the Battle of Batuu, which is depicted in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge via the attraction Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, to 34 years after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates the events of A New Hope to 0 BBY, therefore the events of Galaxy's Edge, including M5-R3's appearance, must take place in 34 ABY.
