The MSE-4 droid was a fifth-degree general-purpose labor droid produced by Rebaxan Columni prior to the onset of the Clone Wars.[1]

The MSE-4 looked almost identical to the later model MSE-6 droid, only much smaller. These tiny droids were produced as part of a test run that, along with the MSE-5 droid, led to the creation and success of the company's MSE-6.[1] A number of MSE-4s were employed by the Confederacy of Independent Systems on Mustafar, working at a secret facility.[2]

Darth Vader scared a group of MSE-4s as he walked down a hallway of the base before slaughtering the Separatist leaders.[2]

Behind the scenesEdit

"What I want is a miniature box droid, like the one Chewbacca scares [in Episode IV]. I want these little quail running down the hallway ahead of Anakin. The idea is 'rats leaving a sinking ship.'"
―George Lucas speaks to Industrial Light & Magic's Rob Coleman and Roger Guyett[src]

The MSE-4 droid first appeared in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, the third and final installment of the prequel trilogy. The 2005 film was written, directed, and executive-produced by George Lucas, who brought up the idea of the droid's appearance on November 18, 2004, after a screening of Revenge of the Sith.[3] The MSE-4 was first identified in The New Essential Guide to Droids.
