- "The Empire hurt people close to me. Family. Friends. A girl I loved, once."
- ―Wedge Antilles, talking about how the Empire harmed Mala
Mala[2] was a female[1] individual who was beloved to Wedge Antilles. At some point during the reign of the Galactic Empire, Mala, along with Antilles' family, were harmed by the Empire.[1][2] During his time with Phoenix Squadron, Antilles wore a flight helmet bearing the name of Mala in Aurebesh.[3][4]
Behind the scenes[]
Mala was first indirectly mentioned in Chuck Wendig's 2015 novel Aftermath.[1] She was first named on Wedge Antilles' flight helmet in the Star Wars Rebels episode "Warhead,"[3] which aired on January 14, 2017.[5] Mala was not identified as a separate character until the release of the fifty-seventh issue of the Star Wars Helmet Collection magazine in 2018.[2] In the Star Wars Legends, the character of Mala Tinero first appeared through flashbacks in "Lucky," a short comic story written by Rob Williams and penciled by Michel Lacombe. It was published in the twenty-third issue of the Star Wars Tales series[6] on May 11, 2005.[7] Her last name of Tinero was identified in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare, penned by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart.[8]
