Mandalore the First was a Taung warrior who conquered the planet Mandalore. He and his followers were originally Taungs from Coruscant who had settled on Roon, and both the species and the planet that they conquered would be renamed after Mandalore himself. Under Mandalore the First, the Taung tamed the savage landscape of the newly christened planet Mandalore, slaughtering the gigantic Mythosaurs that had made the world their home.[2]
According to legend, he formed the Mandalorian Crusaders on Mandalore approximately around 7000 BBY,[2] though Mandalore the Conqueror was actually the Crusaders' first leader. Mandalore the First was the earliest known wearer of a ceremonial mask,[3] carved from the rigid bone of a mythosaur's sternum taken from the slain creature's heart,[4] and modeled after the facial features of the Taung species.[3] He was also the first person to use the title Mand'alor.[5] As his fame and achievements grew, Mandalore's mask became the symbol of his power and leadership to all Mandalorians.[3]
