"Inspired by Empire" — Star Wars: The Official Magazine 66
"MedStar: Intermezzo" is a short story written by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry, published in Star Wars Insider 83 and Star Wars: The Official Magazine 65. It takes place between the novels MedStar I: Battle Surgeons and MedStar II: Jedi Healer and features characters from the two novels. In March 2008, the story was archived on Hyperspace.
Plot summary[]
The story revolves around Jos Vondar who is trying to cope with the death of his best friend, the Zabrak surgeon Zan Yant, during the Battle of Drongar, Due to a twist of fate (or the Force), chief physician, Jos Vondar, has to operate on another Zabrak a week after his close friend was tragically killed. And as if Vondar wasn't grieving enough, this Zabrak is a Separatist mercenary and also complicit in the death of Zan Yant.
While the Zabrak, Sar Omant, asks Jos to kill him in order to avoid the expected torture, he struggles with a desire for revenge, which, however, fades away after Jos does some soul searching and embraces the memories and lessons his best friend has left behind.
Subsequently, Vondar, with the help of Barriss Offee, his lover Tolk le Trene, and the kindly Minder, Klo, comes to terms with his friend's death and begins to operate on the disagreeable Zabrak, Sar Omant, to the best of his ability.
