The megalight per hour (abbreviated MGLT) was a unit used to measure the relative sublight speed of starships in realspace (as opposed to hyperspace), although the velocities were still close enough to the speed of light to cause relativistic effects.[1]

For example, the RZ-1 A-wing interceptor was markedly faster (120 MGLT) than the BTL-A4 Y-wing assault starfighter/bomber (70 MGLT).[2]

The starship with the fastest known maximum realspace speed, the TIE/vn space superiority fighter, had a maximum realspace speed of 155 MGLT.[3]

Industrial Light & Magic's spaceship speed and maneuverability chart created for Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi

The MGLT unit originated in a reference chart comparing the propulsive capabilities of starfighters, drawn by Industrial Light & Magic during the production of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.[14] Some of the figures provided in Star Wars Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to a Galaxy Far, Far Away are markedly different[2] than those shown on the original diagram.[14]

Notes and references[]

  1. According to Raymus, the Tantive IV can cover 0.25 parsecs (about 0.81 light-years) in 8 minutes at full sub-light speed (81 MGLT). This implies a strong time dilation/Lorentz contraction effect, as expected for speeds approaching the speed of light, with a Lorentz factor of approximately 1E4.
