Mephitis was the Mephitisian homeworld. The indigenous people had no sense of smell. Offworlders found the entire planet's atmosphere to have a foul stench.
Behind the scenes
The concept of Mephitis may have been inspired by the Greek myth of King Augeas of Elis, whom cut off his own nose, and his manure-covered Augean stables which he never cleaned. Augeas stole the herds of all his neighbors, whom did not retaliate but rather moved away because of the stench.
