- "What are merit adoptives?"
"Chiss brought in from outside a Family's bloodlines to enrich or diversify or invigorate. All warriors are made merit adoptives when they're accepted into either the Defense Fleet or the Expansionary Fleet. That's why every warrior wears the color of one of the Families." - ―Force Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo to Jorj Car'das
Merit adoptives were Chiss who became part of a Chiss family whose bloodline they did not originally belong to. All Chiss warriors were made merit adoptives of a Chiss family when they were accepted into the Chiss Expansionary Fleet or Chiss Defense Fleet. The rank would be lost at the end of one's military service if that person did not gain the rank of Trial-born first[1] by being "born to trial."[2] The Ruling Families selected merit adoptives in a manner analogously to how the Defense Hierarchy selected senior officers to join their ranks.[1]
