Shortly after their mission to Kijimi, Poe Dameron, Rey, and Finn undertook a mission to Kef Bir, the ocean moon of Endor, to locate one of the Sith wayfinders belonging to Darth Sidious that was located in the ruins of the DS-2 Death Star.
Prelude
After rescuing the Falcon and Chewie, the Resistance objective was to recover the Emperor's wayfinder on the ruins of the second Death Star.
Mission
Due to some tinkering with Falcon, Poe was able to crash the ship on the grass of the ocean moon Kef Bir. Unbeknownst to them, Kef Bir native Jannah was informed by Babu Frik that the "last hope" was coming here. As they exited the damaged Falcon, they came across the ruins of the second Death Star. D-O asked what it was and Rey replied that it was a bad place. They were soon confronted by Jannah and Company 77. When Rey asked that they needed to get to the ruins, Jannah told them that they could help them but they were going to have to go tomorrow since the tides were too high. They also offered to help fix the Falcon. While fixing the Falcon, Jannah offered Finn a part which Finn realized was part of the First Order. Jannah told him that when they settled down here they used both Galactic Empire and First Order parts. She later revealed that she and the rest of her tribe were former First Order stormtrooper. Finn also revealed that he was too was a stormtrooper. Jannah revealed that when they were force to shoot at civilians they refused and layed down their weapon. This caused Finn to explain how the force brought them together, which caused Jannah to tell he said that it was a good thing, to which Finn replied that it was.
Journey into the Past
Unbeknownst to her companions, Rey impatiently piloted a sea skiff to the ruins. She walked and climbed her way through the dilapidated hallways and chasms of the once fearsome second Death Star. She eventually entered the Emperor's throne room, the place where Luke defeated his father and where Anakin fulfilled the prophecy. She approached the throne of her grandfather. Just then, a door beside the throne opened. Rey walked through the door as it closed behind her. Exploring the vault, she discovered the wayfinder. Once she grabbed it, she encountered the dark side version of herself. The dark vision told her not to be afraid of who she was, echoing the words of her master. Her dark side activated her saber staff, and they engaged in a duel. She was no match for her inner darkness, and she tumbled out the vault and dropped the wayfinder. Ren was there, and caught it in his hands. Rey, her anger rising, activated her saber and demanded that he hand it back to her. Kylo responded by telling her that in trying to prove something to his mother, she instead proved something far greater. Rey didn’t relent, and she demanded him again to give back the wayfinder. He answered by telling her that the only way she was going to Exegol was with him, and destroyed the ancient wayfinder in his grip. Infuriated, Rey lashed out with her lightsaber and attacked Ren. While initially dodging it, he soon realized that she would not relent, and he activated his own lightsaber. Leaving the throne room, they took the fight aboard the watery trenches of the ruins.
Fight on the Death Star and Death of a Princess
As the Dyad dueled amidst the waves, Leia sensed the duel between her son and apprentice. Knowing what she had to do, Leia was left alone with only R2 at her side, and an old Rebellion Medal she once gave to Han within her hand. Meanwhile, the Dyad dueled ferociously along the watery trenches of the destroyed superweapon. Ren dominated most of their fight, and Rey eventually was knocked down to her knees by his attacks. However, using the last of her strength, Leia called Ben, and he felt her death from across the galaxy.
As Ren realized what just happened to his mother, he dropped his lightsaber, and as he is distracted, Rey caught and stabbed him with his own weapon. At this moment, Leia Organa, the last princess of Alderaan, Rebellion Hero, and the Leader of the Resistance, breathed her last. Having felt Leia's death, Rey began to mourn, and realized she attempted to slay to Ren in an act of rage. Regretting her actions, she healed Ren’s wound using the Force. She confessed to him that she did want to take his hand, but she wanted to be with him as Ben Solo, not as Kylo Ren. She then escaped in his TIE whisper. As Finn and Jannah watched her depart, The Falcon returned with Poe, Chewie, the droids, and Company 77 aboard. They then picked them up and set off for the Resistance base.
Aftermath
Rey took the Kylo's TIE whisper to Ahch-To to spend the rest of her life in exile, just as her first master Luke Skywalker, had done. The Falcon later returned to the Resistance base on Ajan Kloss, where they heard the news of Leia's death. Back on the Death Star ruins, Kylo looked out into the sea and had a moment with his the memory of his father Han Solo. This caused Ren forsake his identity of Kylo Ren, throw his lightsaber into the sea. He thus became Ben Solo once more. Back on Ahch-To, Rey incinerated the TIE whisper. When she to threw her lightsaber into the inferno, the Force spirit of Luke Skywalker emerged, and inspired her to keep fighting.
Despite having the blood of Palpatine in her veins, he inspired her to not let her bloodline define who she is. Giving her Leia's lightsaber from when when she was training with Luke, she left Ahch-To in Luke's old X-wing to Exegol.
Behind the scenes
The Mission to Kef Bir first appeared in the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, the third and final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.[1]
The scenes of the mission were filmed in England in November 2019. According to Daisy Ridley, the lightsaber fight between Rey and Kylo Ren were physically the most challenging to do for her as in contrast to other lightsaber duels from the trilogy. They were doused with water cannons the whole time, aside that it was very cold as well due to climatic change.[3]
