During the Clone Wars, Jedi General Mace Windu and Lightning Squadron were sent on a mission to the planet Ridlay to investigate its lack of communications. Speaking with Ridlay's inhabitants, Windu discovered that they had been attacked by alleged spirits which had emerged from the Ascension Well during one of Ridlay's eclipses, which occurred every fifty years.[1] By the end of the mission, Windu had become certain the supposed ghosts were actually subterranean natives that only came out during the eclipses.[3]
While investigating the well, Windu and his clone troopers were confronted by Count Dooku, Head of State of the Confederacy of Independent Systems,[1] who hoped to turn the ghost-like beings into Separatist soldiers. Dooku and Windu engaged in a lightsaber duel with Dooku forced to retreat.[3]
