- «Oh, Ghal. You should've just done as you were told.»
- ―Ghirra Starros threatens Ghal Tarpfen in poorly-spoken Mon Calamari
Mon Calamari was a language spoken by the sentient species of the same name native to the planet Mon Cala. It could also be spoken by humans.[1] Around 230 BBY,[2] Ghal Tarpfen, the Mon Calamari Head of Security of the Galactic Republic space station Starlight Beacon, had not heard the Mon Calamari language since she had departed her homeworld years before. However, after discovering she had been targeted for a blackmail attempt by the Nihil pirates, Tarpfen was ambushed by the traitorous Republic Senator Ghirra Starros, who spoke to Tarpfen in poor Mon Calamari, telling her she should have done what she was told before an associate of Starros knocked Tarpfen unconscious.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The Mon Calamari language first canonically appeared in the Star Wars Insider short story "Starlight: Shadows Remain" by Justina Ireland, the first part of which was published in issue 207[1] on December 14, 2021.[3] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Mon Calamarian was first mentioned in the 1987 West End Games sourcebook The Star Wars Sourcebook,[4] and first appeared in the 1994 novel Dark Apprentice, written by Kevin J. Anderson.[5]
Calamarian, a similarly-named writing system, was introduced in "Rose Knows,"[6] a comic story published in the sixth issue of the 2017 Star Wars Adventures series.[7] No connection has yet been made between the language and the writing system.
