"They're called Mountaintop smugglers. Their leader is Janelle. You'll have to go fight them to get the ring back. And if you win, maybe I won't have to pay any of the rest of what I owe them."
Herman Pate, to a spacer[1]

The Mountaintop smugglers were a criminal organization in operation during the time of the Galactic Civil War. The organization primarily consisted of smugglers and spice runners.[1]

History[]

"There were some spice smugglers I owed some money to. Janelle, their leader, seemed to really like the ring, and offered to overlook my late payments in exchange for the ring."
―Herman Pate, to a spacer[1]

Sometime following the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY, they were led by a Human woman by the name of Janelle, and operated a camp in the Gallo Mountains on the Mid Rim world of Naboo, a short distance east of the city of Dee'ja Peak.[1] In 1 ABY,[2] Janelle acquired a ring from Herman Pate as a payment of a debt. The ring was a family heirloom previously lost by Vance Groten to Herman Pate during a Sabacc game. As Groten intended to recover his ring, he dispatched spacers to find the smuggler leader. The spacers killed Janelle and at least twenty-three other members at their camp.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Mountaintop smugglers appeared in the 2003 massively multiplayer online roleplaying game Star Wars Galaxies,[1] prior to the game's closure on December 15, 2011.[3] The Mountaintop smugglers were added to the game as part of the "Legacy Quest" with the release of the "Publish 25", a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005.[4]

  2. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
