A naginata[2] was a type of polearm with a long shaft and a blade at the end. It was a melee weapon that could be wielded with one hand.[1] When a village on the planet Genbara was attacked by bandits, one of the village's guards, a Trandoshan,[2] used both a sword[1] and a naginata to fight back against the bandits in melee combat.[2] When the bandits' leader,[1] the Sith Kouru,[2] emerged from her vehicle, the Trandoshan pointed[1] his[2] naginata at her while demanding her surrender. In response, Kouru leapt down, and the Trandoshan readied his weapons, but was killed before he could use them against Kouru.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
A naginata first appeared in "The Duel," a short film in the Star Wars: Visions series written by Takashi Okazaki and directed by Takanobu Mizuno. The animated short, produced by Kamikaze Douga, was released on Disney+[1] on September 22, 2021.[3] Prior to the short's release, the naginata was first mentioned in a video promoting the series that was uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on July 3 of that year.[4] In the real world, a naginata is a type of traditional Japanese weapon.[5]
