The Nami were a nomadic species of sapients in the Outer Rim. Originally from the Galactic Core, they were driven into the Rim by the Galactic Empire. Years later, a female Nami leader named Ali Terrack came to power. Forces under her command captured a prototype of the new TIE Defenderstarfighter that the Empire was making. Terrack also needed the TIE Defender project's lead scientist. But, on his way to Coruscant he was captured by the Reniki Pirates. They held him for ransom to the highest bidder at the planet Kilomar. Terrack knew the Empire would be the highest bidder, so she devised a plan with the strongest anti-Imperial forces in the system, Imperial traitors under the command of former Grand Admiral Zaarin. When the Empire went to Kilomar to pick up the scientist, Terrack's forces attacked the Interdictor Red Claw carying the scientist, and disableing its hyperdrive. The ship's commander called in two Imperial corvettes for reinforcements. The first would take the scientist to safety, the second would bring a team to repair the Red Claw. But Zaarin sent in one of his corvettes, claiming it was the first, there to pick up the scientist, and the second was delayed. One of Zaarin's strike cruisers provided cover for the corvette as it escaped with the scientist. Zaarin handed the scientist over to Terrack. Soon afterwords, the Nami began construction of TIE Defenders. Terrack even planned to sell some to the Rebel Alliance. The Emperor, seeing the significence of the situation, dispatched one of his best commanders to disrupt the deal, then Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn brough a new Imperial Starfighter, the Missile Gunboat with his forces. The Misile Gunboat was still an experimental craft, but it was vastly supiror to the TIE Defender. Terrack's armed merchant strike cruser was captured by Thrawn's forces before it could send any TIE Defenders to a Rebel Carrack Cruiser. Admiral Thrawn's Star Destroyer the Grey Wolf followed fleeing Nami forces to Terrack's TIE Defender factory space station. He gave one simple order to his pilots that a briefing officer passed down to Imperial Ace pilot Maarek Stele "FOR THE GREATER GLORY OF THE EMPIRE DESTROY EVERYTHING!" Indeed everything was destroyed. The new Missle Gunboat took out the remaining Nami TIE Defenders and the Star Destroyer Grey Wolf and a group of TIE Bombers destroyed the TIE Defender factory. All Nami forces, even every last mine, was destroyed. All except for Terrack. She fled the Factory when its deflector shields went out in a Corellian Transport. She sent a message to Thrawn saying "Cease your attack or your precious scientist dies!" Thrawn responded saying "Then you will die too, Terrack." But Thrawn never inteded to kill her. instead, he had her Corellian Transport disabled by Assault Gunboats and then borded. Terrack was captured, and sent to Coruscant. There she would be trained to server the Emperor. The back of the Nami armed forces was broken. Never again would they rise up like this. The Nami were, as it seemed, eternally demoralized.

The Nami were a nomadic species of sentients in the Outer Rim Territories.

History

Originally from the Galactic Core, they were driven into the Rim during the Clone Wars and largely forgotten.

Years later, a female Nami leader named Ali Tarrak came to power. Forces under her command captured a prototype of the new TIE/D Defender starfighter produced by the Galactic Empire, and very nearly precipitated an arms race by attempting to sell that technology to the Rebels. Under her leadership, the Nami proved a serious new threat to the balance of power in the Empire, having acquired one its most advanced starfighters and assembled their own facilities to pursue independent production of these starfighters. The Nami also proved a highly tenacious foe in battle, wreaking havoc on TIE Defender facilities loyal to the Empire during Tarrak's reign. Eventually she was captured and sent to Coruscant, where she would be trained to serve the Emperor. Deprived of their production centers and their leader, the Nami species sank back into obscurity.

The Nami were Human-sized, if not Humans themselves, as they could comfortably fly TIE Defenders produced to Human pilot standards. Tarrak's voice over the radio comlink during the prototype-capture conflict sounded very Human and accentless.

Prior to their short-lived acquisition of the TIE Defender, the Nami also flew the T-wing interceptor as their primary strike fighter, along with a formidable wing of Y-wing starfighters. They also maintained a small fleet of combat ships, several of them Strike-class medium cruisers, such as the Bognog, . They maintained numerous facilities for manufacturing the TIE Defender upon their capture of such ships, but these were eventually destroyed by the Empire, depriving the Nami of their brief spaceflight advantage.
