The New Republic Presidential election of 11 ABY saw the resignation of Mon Mothma, Chief of State of the New Republic for seven years. She named as her successor Leia Organa Solo, her right hand for eleven of those years, which led to her election by the New Republic Senate.
It was the first change of leadership in the New Republic, although due to the nature of both the incumbent and the Chief-elect, executive policies remained essentially the same. However, it did see the dissolution of the New Republic Inner Council and its replacement by the New Republic Ruling Council.
Occasional absences from office by Organa Solo would result in brief 'caretaker' terms by Mothma and Ponc Gavrisom, and she was nearly toppled from power by the Senate during the Black Fleet Crisis, but she weathered all storms, not resigning from office until 23 ABY.
