- "Centuries ago, this world—Niraya—was inhabited, with a number of large population centers. A gravitational anomaly pushed the planet far from its original orbit, causing it to freeze over. The ice is now many kilometers deep, the world abandoned."
- ―C-3PO
Niraya was a planet in the Inner Rim that was inhabited centuries before the Imperial Era, featuring a number of cities. The former Jedi Knight Azlin Rell hid the weapon known as the Grim Rose in a city on Niraya. A gravitational anomaly pushed the planet out of its original orbit, resulting in Niraya freezing over. Centuries afterward, Niraya's cities were buried beneath kilometers of ice. The Galactic Empire established a garrison on Niraya and left autonomous mining droidnaughts to delve into the ice and extract metals and minerals from the wreckage of the former cities. After the Jedi Luke Skywalker learned of the Grim Rose from an imprint of Rell in the Living Sea of Gazian, Skywalker and a number of rebels—Leia Organa, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2—visited Niraya to find the weapon, hoping it could be used to end the Galactic Civil War against the Empire. After the rebels arrived to find the artifact buried beneath the ice, R2-D2 sliced into one of the mining droids and utilized it to dig a path to the Grim Rose, which Skywalker retrieved.[1]
