Plot summary[]

"A Shadow Falls on the Padawan"
As he awaits an inevitable storm in the remote deserts of Tatooine, Obi-Wan
takes time to reflect on–and record–key moments of a heroic life long-lived….

On Tatooine in 1 BBY, Obi-Wan Kenobi remains in the shelter of his hut while a sandstorm that will hit in a few hours strengthens. To pass the time, Obi-Wan writes in his journal and notes that in these times he must remain aware so that he doesn’t find himself enveloped in the shadows as the promise of such a cloak can suddenly become cold and binding. He reflects on his recent conflict with Maul - someone who was eternally bound in this cold embrace. Maul was too far gone to ever glimpse the light again, and while the shadows within him were pulling Obi-Wan in like a magnet, he was able to draw himself away from the abyss at Maul’s ultimate end. In Maul and all Sith comes sadness from darkness and shadow, and while Maul lay dying in horror, Obi-Wan had felt the dread that played out through his whole life. Obi-Wan recalls how none of his masters ever told him that his lessons learned in youth can be undone later in life, only to be revealed as more layered truths. For example, he had once believed that no matter the weight of a given darkness, there was always a chance for light to break through.

Flashing back to his time as a Padawan under Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, the two Jedi travel to the Codia System, and while approaching Codia’s Second Moon, Obi-Wan notes that it is still bathed in light from their star. Qui-Gon reads the words of the mining outpost, which state that it is in “utter blackness”. Obi-Wan isn’t sure how this can be and believes that they’re bluffing, but Qui-Gon tells him that while he seems to have all of the answers, he fails to solve the riddle and needs to look upon the situation with their own eyes to find a solution. As they land their Jedi shuttle on Codia’s Second Moon, Qui-Gon says that in service comes illumination and a light that lasts. As the two depart from their ship and receive no response from the command center, they realize that the complete darkness was true and so they wear a pair of macrobinoculars. Obi-Wan notes how the light feels more absent than blocked and talks about the moon’s dwarf star, but Qui-Gon instructs him to quiet his mind to limit distraction.

As they enter the mining outpost, they quickly come across flesh blood, but when they activate their lightsabers, they find that their blades are much dimmer than normal. Making their way into the command center, they discover an injured man lying on the floor, and Obi-Wan notes in his journal that Codia I had two moons - one moss-covered and forested under starlight where ranchers breed Reeks for aggression and combat, and the second moon being a phoenix world that possesses a vast ocean on its darker side, but with a rockier surface facing the Codian Star and pockmarked with massive diamond deposits. When Obi-Wan speaks to the dying man, he hears from his final words that something has gone mad and killed them all. When investigating the outpost’s systems, the Jedi learn that the power core is completely disabled and unresponsive after suggesting damage to its integrity, and radiation levels with strange signatures and fluctuations that could be suppressing the light. As they move on, Obi-Wan notices that their lightsabers continue to darken which causes him to think that it’s the possible presence of the dark side and Sith, but when Qui-Gon assures his apprentice that the Sith are long dead, Obi-Wan notes in his journal that he wishes they knew of the Sith’s re-emergence sooner as it could’ve changed things entirely.

When the two are traveling down a flight of stairs, Obi-Wan is suddenly knocked over by a force that they can’t see, and this is followed by someone yelling out for help nearby. Qui-Gon instructs his apprentice to follow the shadow since Obi-Wan is younger and more vigorous, while Qui-Gon will go to aid the man because of his unwavering focus. As Obi-Wan follows his attacker, he admits to being filled with fear, especially when he sees a thing of pure evil through the infrared of his macrobinoculars. Before Obi-Wan stands a large Defel drenched in blood, and as it quickly charges him, he is unaware that in the moment, the puzzle’s solution was eluding him still. Obi-Wan finds himself being attacked from many angles without being able to defend against the beast as it seemingly disappears, causing Obi-Wan to wonder if it is a phantom. Recovering after being wounded, Obi-Wan remembers his training and removes his goggles, and when the beast attacks next he kicks it squarely down to the ground just as Qui-Gon arrives with a thief who was responsible for knocking out the outpost’s power core in an attempt to steal a shipment of the moon’ diamonds. Obi-Wan realizes that the dead man upstairs is also a burglar, and the thief informs them that the core can’t be reignited since they used a non-incendiary photonic rod to destroy the fuel rod. Knowing that the power core was comprised primarily of solid accelerite, Obi-Wan concludes that a photonic burst could lead to peculiar radioactivity that is capable of suppressing the light spectrum. Within hours, it could fuse with the atmosphere and plunge the entire moon into darkness for eons that would kill off any living thing, and Obi-Wan notes how the puzzle is nearly complete except for the Defel being the missing piece.

As they continue on through the corridors, they are suddenly shot at by a Gran, but quickly make amends and learn that he’s the outpost’s supervisor who had escaped to the barracks with the other miners. When the creature is brought up, the Gran reassures that there are no animals, but there is a Defel miner named Rosack Denhast who may have broken with sanity. Qui-Gon informs his Padawan that Defels are sensitive to light, and the intense radiation and its rapid changes could have driven him mad. Rosack attacks the group, but Obi-Wan becomes dedicated to helping Rosack return to the light since he’s in need, so while Qui-Gon holds the Defel back, Obi-Wan goes to solve the riddle. The supervisor leads Obi-Wan to the power core, and once inside, Obi-Wan finds what remains of the broken field rod. Obi-Wan reassembles the rod using the Force, and in order to fuse the pieces together, the Gran raises the chamber’s temperature as Obi-Wan lifts the rod into the core’s upper conduit up in the ceiling. Putting together all of the pieces of the puzzle, Obi-Wan is able to restore the core’s power, but suffers from the accelerite’s energy as he goes blind for the time being.

Afterwards in a medical room, Qui-Gon tells Obi-Wan that his eyes will heal in time, and Rosack then speaks with the Padawan. While his mind is now at peace, Rosack is troubled because of his actions, and even though he only killed murderous thieves, he still killed, which doesn’t sit right with him. Qui-Gon then says how light and shadow are always wrestling each other, and Obi-Wan finishes writing this in his journal in the present.

  2. The frame story from Obi-Wan occurs during c. 1 BBY per the reasoning here
  3. In the flashbacks seen in Obi-Wan 2, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn go on a mission. Padawan depicts Kenobi’s first mission, and since Obi-Wan 2 depicts a different mission, it must take place after. Since Qui-Gon is still alive in the flashback, it must take place before his death. As Star Wars: Timelines dates the novel to 41 BBY and Qui-Gon’s death to 32 BBY, the flashback must take place between those two years.
