This article is about Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber.
You may be looking for his second lightsaber, or his final lightsaber.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber,[2] also known more simply as Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber,[4] was the lightsaber constructed by and wielded by Obi-Wan Kenobi when he was a Padawan. It was based on the simple design of his master Qui-Gon Jinn's weapon.[2] Kenobi lost this weapon during the Invasion of Naboo during a duel with the Sith Lord Darth Maul, who kicked it into a pit inside the Theed power generator. Obi-Wan would later build himself a replica of this weapon that he would wield as a Jedi Knight until the start of the Clone Wars, after which he would use a new lightsaber of a completely different design.

This lightsaber was powered by a diatium power cell, which was surrounded by the notched hand grip.[2] During his Mission to Pijal, the kyber crystal which powered the blade of the weapon was briefly swapped with a kohlen crystal. This ended up saving his life, as such a blade was able to cut through armor which was similarly powered by kohlen crystals.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

"The first big experience for me was going to the studio where we shot Episode I. The propsmaster brought up a big chest, and he looked me in the eye and he opened it up, and I got to choose Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber. So that was a moment I'll never forget. The first lightsaber work we did was when we fight Darth Maul. That was an amazing thing to be part of. It was incredibly intricate, we were just going so fast."
―Ewan McGregor[7]

Obi-Wan Kenobi's first lightsaber first appeared in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the first installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.[1] It was first identified by the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars.[2]

After director George Lucas showed Ewan McGregor, the actor who played Kenobi in the prequels, around the studio, they went to the props-making department, and the prop master showed him a chest of lightsaber props. McGregor then got to choose which lightsaber he would use in the film.[8] The first lightsaber work he did was when he trained for the duel against Darth Maul. He thought it was an amazing thing to be part of, and he found the duels to be very intricate and fast.[7]
