―Obi-Wan Kenobi after his lightsaber malfunctions[7]

Obi-Wan Kenobi's third lightsaber was the third, and final, lightsaber to be constructed and wielded by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi wielded the saber during the Clone Wars and the Great Jedi Purge as well as the first, two intermediate, and final duels against Darth Vader.

Design[]

The lightsaber's design branched out from his former two lightsabers—both being designed after his master Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber—showing his growth as an independent Jedi, especially after his promotion to the Jedi Council.[8]

History[]

Obi-Wan Kenobi wields his third lightsaber during the Clone Wars

After he lost his second lightsaber prior to the First Battle of Geonosis,[9] Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, who was promoted to the title of Jedi Master as well,[10] built a new lightsaber for himself during the ensuing Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems.[11] Serving as the Jedi General of the 212th Attack Battalion, Kenobi used the lightsaber throughout his service against the Confederacy military, even dueling the likes of Count Dooku,[12] Commander Asajj Ventress,[13] General Grievous,[14] and other powerful foes, including the former Sith Maul when he re-emerged onto the galactic scene.[15] During his final duel with Grievous, Kenobi lost the lightsaber but eventually reclaimed it when it was given back to him by Clone Commander CC-2224 "Cody". He would also use this lightsaber to duel his fallen apprentice Darth Vader on Mustafar and would continue to wield the weapon during his exile on the planet Tatooine,[8] although he was reluctant to use it as he kept himself hidden.[16]

In fact, Kenobi buried his lightsaber, along with the Skywalker lightsaber, in a chest out in the desert to avoid using it. However, when Senator Bail Prestor Organa begged him to leave Tatooine to save his daughter Leia Organa, Kenobi uncovered the chest[17] and wielded it during his mission to Daiyu,[18] as well as on Mapuzo, where he confronted his former apprentice after he only recently learned Skywalker wasn't dead and that he, in fact, survived the injuries Obi-Wan inflicted on Mustafar. Kenobi would see what his apprentice had become and would finally ignite his lightsaber once more to defend himself. Skywalker, now fully turned into Darth Vader wouldn't hold back would slander and attacked Kenobi with powerful lightsaber strikes, using his strength to overwhelm Kenobi who hadn't fought saber-to-saber since the events of their last duel and was out of practice. Vader grabbed Kenobi in a Force choke, disarming him, and lighting the flammable ground on fire, throwing Obi-Wan to the ground, causing Kenobi to start to be burned alive; Vader wanting Kenobi to experience the similar torment he had felt on the ground of Mustafar.[19]

Kenobi used his lightsaber until the time of his death.

Tala Durith, a member of the Hidden Path distracted Vader and his stormtroopers with an ambush long enough for the loader droid NED-B to pick the injured Kenobi off the ground and escape under the cover of the flames, recovering Kenobi's lightsaber in the process.[19] After again using the lightsaber to rescue Organa once more[20] and to fend off the attack on Jabiim,[21] Kenobi used his lightsaber in a second rematch with Vader, which Kenobi won, on a barren moon. After his return to Tatooine,[22] Kenobi used the lightsaber against the Wookiee bounty hunter Krrsantan.[23] Years later, Kenobi used his lightsaber on his final duel against Maul, defeating him by cutting him and his double-bladed lightsaber with a single strike.[24]

Kenobi continued to use the blade up until his death at the hands of Vader during their rematch on the Death Star.[8] With his death, Kenobi vanished into the Force, leaving behind his robes and lightsaber.[1] Afterward, Vader picked up his former master's fallen blade.[25] Kenobi's second apprentice, Luke Skywalker, later used his weapon's design as a basis for the construction of his own lightsaber with a green kyber crystal.[8]

Behind the scenes[]

"In here, of course, we have Obi-Wan lightsaber. This was designed to be exactly like his hero lightsaber from the prequels. What they did do is age it so that it made a little bit of patina on the emitter and also the base just to make it look as if it had been a decade or so since it's been used."
―A member of the Lucasfilm Archives discussing the lightsaber prop used in Obi-Wan Kenobi[26]

Lightsaber prop used in Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi Wan Kenobi's third lightsaber first appeared in the first Star Wars film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[1] It was first identified by a card in Star Wars: Card Trader.[27] The original prop was created from the balance pipe of a Rolls-Royce Derwent jet engine, a World War I–era No. 3 Mark I British rifle grenade, a battery pack, and a faucet handle.[28]

As a blooper in Revenge of the Sith, Grievous can be seen wielding Obi-Wan's lightsaber in the scene of General Grievous' duel in Utapau but with a green blade.[29]

During production of the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series, the main goal was to slow everything down so that the imagery can have as much weight as possible, especially when it was going to help articulate Kenobi's arc. Because of this, the first episode's closing image was Kenobi's lightsaber on his hip. The main goal was also the reason the second episode ended with Kenobi holding his lightsaber and not using it, which caused the use of the weapon to be meaningful.[30] The prop making team made a lightsaber prop that was designed to be exactly like the hero lightsaber seen in the prequel trilogy.[26] Propmaster Brad Elliott said that the lightsaber was the trickiest thing for his team to figure out because the lightsaber from Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith differed in many details from the lightsaber seen in A New Hope.[31] The team aged the prop so that it made a little bit of patina on the emitter and the base to make it look like the lightsaber hadn't been used in about a decade.[26]
