Plot summary[]
Seeds of yesterday[]
Years later, Cad Bane and Niro's crime-ridden neighborhood has become a pleasant place with parks filled with parents and their children. In the main street, a Trandoshan named Vak Lako riding a speeder bike narrowly avoids colliding with a landspeeder, alarming nearby pedestrians. The Trandoshan rides his speeder into a nearby landing field, which is full of shuttles. After menacing two pedestrians, he shakes hands with a mustached human man named Tay Grutty.
A Duros port worker named Gibbs watches the pair from a starship. Via holoprojector, he contacts Marshal Niro and warns him that Vak Lako is back. Niro responds that Lako is a free man who has served his sentence. Gibbs reports that Lako is in the presence of another criminal named Tay Grutty. Gibbs expresses concern that two of Cad Bane's associates are meeting together. Niro responds that Bane is locked up at Torano and will not be out for another five years. Niro thanks Gibbs for the tip before terminating the connection.
Niro walks around the desk and drinks from a mug. The deputy Vance consults a computer and discovers that Bane has been released on a technicality. Niro expresses annoyance with the justice system but believes that Bane will not return to their neighborhood. Vance consults a data screen and reports that a shuttle from Torano will be due to arrive at noon. Niro sighs but believes that they should not overreact. Vance warns that Bane swore revenge on the day he was arrested for the Marshal's murder. Vane believes that Bane is coming here to settle scores. Niro checks his watch which reads 11:00.
Niro and Isaac[]
Shortly later, a police droid informs Niro that the Mayor and town council would like to meet with him. Niro prepares for the meeting while a second droid walks into the police station with a young child who resembles Cad Bane. Vance believes that Grutty and Lako's presence foreshadows the return of Bane. Niro vows to be ready. The deputy suggests that Niro lay low but Niro is unwilling to let their community slide back into lawlessness. Vance warns that this issue is personal since Bane is not going to forgive following the shooting incident with Arin.
Niro spots the child Isaac, who runs under the desks. Niro says that Isaac doesn't know the full story and vows to keep it that way. He grabs a blaster from a safe and holsters it. Niro calls to Isaac, who asks if a "bad man" is coming. Niro responds that he will not let it happen on his watch. The deputy says that he has never killed anyone. Niro says he hopes it doesn't come to that. Before Niro heads into the council chambers, he tells Vance to look after Isaac. Isaac watches as Niro leaves.
The town hall meeting[]
At the town hall, Niro walks past several constituents. He speaks with the Mayor, who is aware of rumors of Bane's impending return. Niro says that they believe that Bane will arrive on the noon shuttle. Niro says that nothing is going to happen. A Duros councillor suggests sending droids to deal with Bane while a female human councillor advises Niro not to let his past relationship with Bane cause things to escalate out of control. The Duros councillor advises killing Bane before he strikes but Niro does not believe that anyone needs to die.
Niro accepts that Bane used to be his friend but says that things have changed. The female Duros mayor suggests that Niro leave the town for his own safety. Niro vows to handle the situation. Meanwhile, Isaac stares at a picture of Cad Bane on a screen. The deputy Vance paces while watching a security screen of the gang members at the spaceport.
A veiled threat[]
Later, Niro enters a bar and confronts Tay Grutty. Grutty tells Niro he is not welcome at the establishment because of the way he treats his friends. He then asks Niro how Arin is doing. Niro responds that he knows the answer. Grutty says he does. When Niro says that he saved Arin's life, Grutty says that is a funny away to think about it. Grutty reaches for his blaster, prompting Niro to reach for his. Grutty reveals his was bluffing before telling the Ithorian bartender to serve Niro a drink. Rejecting the veiled threat, Niro tips the glass upside down on the table, causing the liquid to spill out.
Bane's return[]
Meanwhile, a shuttle approaches the planet. Niro visits the derelict candy shop and eyes two small Duros children. Grutty and Lako wait outside the shuttle from Torano as several passengers of various species including Duros file out. The last to exit the ramp is Cad Bane. One of the gang members gives him his hat. When Bane asks about his girlfriend Arin, Grutty reveals that she married Marshal Niro. Bane pauses and scowls in rage.
Returning to the police station, Niro learns that Deputy Vance has handed in his badge, leaving Isaac with the droids. Niro asks a police droid to take Isaac home. Isaac says that he wants to stay with him but Niro says he will come for him once the storm is over. He hugs his adopted son, who walks away with the police droid. Multiple police droids grab blasters. At the town hall, the Duros councillor denounces the Marshal as a coward. The mayor disagrees and says something is troubling Niro, which he won't say. The Duros councillor says that he hopes that Niro comes to his senses with his droids.
Niro's last stand[]
The human councillor explains that Bane has come for Arin and says she pities Isaac who has to live through all this. The mayor says Isaac's name. Bane walks through the streets of his old neighbourhood, prompting several pedestrians to react with fear. Bane approaches the station and confronts Niro, who is waiting for him. Bane is flanked by several police droids. However, Grutty and Lako have set up position on the rooftops.
Elsewhere, Isaac rides in the passenger seat of an open speeder. The speeder stops at a bustling intersection. While the droid is waiting, he jumps out of the speeder. Meanwhile, Niro tells Bane that his wife Arin passed away two years ago. This angers Bane, who says he shouldn't have said that. Just then, Isaac runs up to his "papa" Niro and hugs his leg. Niro tells his adopted son that he needs to leave but Bane takes an interest in Isaac. Bane promises to take care of his son Isaac.
Just then, Niro spots the two snipers on the roofs. Bane touches his hat and the snipers take out the police droids flanking Niro. One of the droids manages to shoot Grutt, who falls from his ledge. Niro and Isaac shelter by the door of the police station. Niro puts his gun aside and says that he wants to share something that Arin told him before her death. Bane says he is done with talking and that it is too late. Niro heads down the stairs and into the street. He faces Bane in a dueling stance while Isaac watches. The two former friends stare each other down. They then fire two shots each. Bane fires two shots at Niro, who falls to the ground.
A hollow victory[]
Isaac runs to his adoptive father. Bane approaches the mortally wounded Niro, who is being tended to by Isaac. When Bane says that Niro took everything from him, Niro disagrees and motions towards Isaac. As Bane stares into the tearful eyes of Isaac, he realizes that Isaac is his and Arin's son. Bane tries to approach Isaac in a friendly way but the boy avoids him.
Just then, the Duros mayor runs beside Isaac and forms a protective shield around him. She tells Bane to stay away from the boy. Bane holsters his blaster while Isaac grieves over his fallen adoptive father. The mayor comforts him. Isaac turns and watches as Bane walks down the street. Several pedestrians watch while the mayor holds Isaac in a comforting embrace. Bane walks away, having won a hollow victory.
