"The Rebellion relies heavily on their Special Forces Soldiers. By eliminating as many of them as possible we will dramatically impact their offensive efforts."
Darth Vader, to an Imperial spacer[15]

Operation Clenched Fist was one of the small operations that were led by Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader against the increasing activity of the Alliance to Restore the Republic,[15] in 1 ABY.[16] After the Battle of Yavin, during the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance struggled for the control of several cities in the galaxy. During periods of Imperial occupation of the cities of Bestine, Coronet City or Theed, Darth Vader landed in these three capital cities aboard his shuttle ST 321. Accompanied by a group of Triumphant-class dark troopers, the Sith Lord attempted to rally support for the Imperial cause and recruit troops for dangerous missions against the Rebellion. Vader recruited a skillful group of the Imperial Special Forces to hunt down the Special Forces of the Rebellion. The spacers subsequently traveled in the galaxy and killed twenty members of the Alliance Special Forces.[15] The successful Imperial spacers were later assigned to Operation Dark Glory.[14]

Behind the scenes[]

Operation Clenched Fist appeared as a quest in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[15] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[17] The quest was added to the game with the "Publish 19," on June 29, 2005.[18]

During periods of Imperial occupation of the cities of Bestine, Coronet or Theed, Darth Vader would periodically land in these cities. Vader would offer players of the Imperial faction up to eight different quests, half of which were designated as "Combatant" quests (to be carried out against Rebel non-player characters), and the other half of which were designated as "Special Forces" quests (to be carried out against Rebel-aligned players). Operation Clenched Fist was the third of the four Imperial Special Forces missions that players received from Darth Vader.[15]

  16. 16.0 16.1 The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
