The rank of Patriarch was the highest political rank and title within a Chiss family, serving as that family's leader. The Patriarch was responsible for advocating for the family's best interests in many different ways, including but not limited to recruiting family members. Patriarchs were highly respected and held the honorific title of "Your Venerante."[1] Chiss family Patriarchs did not need to be male;[2] a woman named Mitth'omo'rossodo was the Twelfth Patriarch of the Mitth family.[3]
Patriarchs of Ruling Families had the power to appoint and disclose the existence of a Syndic Prime for their family within the Chiss Syndicure.[2] Family Patriarchs could also circumvent the normal bureaucratic process of rematching, cutting the time for a recruit to join the family from several months to nearly instantaneous, as Mitth family Patriarch Thooraki secretly did to recruit Kivu'raw'nuru.[1]
Chiss family Patriarchs could authorize military action for their family fleet. In the event a Patriarch could not be reached, Patriels could declare a family emergency for their planet.[2]
Upon the death of a family Patriarch, a successor was chosen by the family Speaker and Patriels.[2]
