"Greetings, citizen. Happy Empire Day to you."
―Commander Pex, to an Empire Day participant[1]

Pex was a male Human who served the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War as a public relations officer.

Biography[]

"Greetings Citizens of the Empire, as chief public relations officer I greet you in the name of the Emperor and pass his best wishes to you on this special day. Each year since the Galactic Senate in its infinite wisdom entrusted the government of the galaxy to the impeccable guidance of the Emperor Palpatine, Empire day has been a cause for Celebration.."
―Commander Pex[2]

By the time of the Battle of Yavin, Commander Pex served as Chief Public Relations Officer of the Galactic Empire.[2] During the Empire Day festivities[1] of 1 ABY,[3] he resided in a hotel at the city of Nashal on Talus. It was here that he instructed an Imperial spacer to visit an Imperial garrison historian on Rori, to help him collect data for a report he was writing. The mission eventually led the spacer to Darth Vader at Outpost GRF-7493 on Yavin 4.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

An "Imperial PR officer" appeared as a non-player character in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[4] The Imperial PR officer was added to the game upon the release of the "Publish 19," on June 29, 2005.[5] During the 2005 Empire Day live event from June 29 to July 11, 2005,[2] he could be found in Nashal and started a quest titled "Happy Empire Day!," which would send players on an important mission throughout the galaxy.[1] The web article "Friday Feature - Empire Day" on the official Star Wars Galaxies website introduced the Empire Day live event to players and clearly identified the "Imperial PR officer" from the game as "Chief Public Relations Officer Commander Pex".[2] After the live event ended, Pex never reappeared in the game since the Empire Day event was discontinued until its complete overhaul in 2008.[6]

  3. According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
