"So says the Pirate's Code."
―Chaelt — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[2]

The Pirate's Code,[1] also known as the Pirate Code,[3] was a set of rules followed by pirates. The Code allowed individual crew members to mutiny against their captain. In order to become new captain, one needed to either defeat the incumbent captain or have them say that they yielded.[1] In addition, the Pirate's Code stipulated the "equal time" rule during trials and allowed the defendant the Right of Last Appeal.[2] Another part of the Pirate's Code specified that a captain could lay claim to only one vessel at a time.[3]

Around 9 ABY,[4] the Pirate's Code was invoked by Jod Na Nawood when he challenged Captain Fern of the Skeleton Crew. Threatened with death, Fern proclaimed that[1] she[5] yielded, at which point Jod assumed the position of captain and had the pirate droid SM-33 under his command.[1] Some time later, the Code was cited by the pirate Chaelt during Jod's trial. Notwithstanding his comrades' enthusiastic reaction, Captain Brutus had apparently passed a verdict without respecting equal time and the Right of Last Appeal. Following Chaelt's complaint, Jod was allotted his speech time in line with the Code and allowed to make his defense until an hourglass operated by Brutus ran out.[2]

Later, after pulling the Onyx Cinder aboard his pirate frigate and killing Brutus to regain his leadership over his pirate crew, Silvo laid claim to the Onyx Cinder. However, SM-33 pointed out that Jod was already the captain of the frigate. Although Silvo denounced his right to the pirate frigate and quickly claimed the Onyx Cinder, Fern called unclaimsies to revert Silvo's claim and claimed the ship for younglings only. While Silvo believed the procedure would not work like that, SM-33—who concurred with him—noted that claimsies was close enough for Fern to reclaim the starship.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The Pirate's Code first appeared in "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates,"[1] the fifth episode of the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which aired on December 24, 2024.[6]

  4. Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" of The Mandalorian Season One to 9 ABY. In addition, "A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 228 also dates "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" to nine years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which corresponds to 9 ABY per Timelines. "Part Seven: Dreams and Madness" takes place after the conflict on Mandalore, which is the main event depicted in "Chapter 23: The Spies" and "Chapter 24: The Return," the final two episodes of The Mandalorian Season Three. Therefore, Seasons One through Three of Star Wars: The Mandalorian must all be set in 9 ABY as well. StarWars.com SWCA 2022: 20 Highlights from Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on StarWars.com (backup link) states that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew takes place in the same timeframe as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka—the latter of which can also be dated to 9 ABY following the reasoning here. As such, Skeleton Crew must take place around 9 ABY as well.
