Plasma drills were a type of superheated drill originally developed for asteroid mining. They were capable of digging through almost any material, given enough time. Plasma drills could also be mounted onto vehicles to tunnel under enemy fortifications and excavate hidden facilities. They typically cost 4,000 credits on the market and notable models included the Pretormin Environmental Mk II Thermal Auger and the Ghelrar Consortium "Worldsplitter" Plasma Drill.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Plasma drills were first mentioned in the new Star Wars Canon in Fully Operational,[1] a 2018 sourcebook for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games.[2] They originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in Tales of the Smoking Blaster, a four-part roleplaying adventure written by Bill Smith and published in the Star Wars Gamemaster Handbook in 1993.[3]
