Plot summary[]

Book I, Part III
BLACK SQUADRON
Thirty years have passed since the defeat of the
Empire, but a new threat has arrived in the form of
the oppressive First Order. Standing in opposition to
their expansion is the Resistance.

Poe Dameron and his team of pilots—Black
Squadron—have been tasked with finding Lor San
Tekka, an explorer who may know Luke Skywalker's
location. Traveling to the explorer's last known
whereabouts, they find a planet whose inhabitants
worship and care for an egg they believe nurtures
their unborn savior.

But all is not well—a tracking device secretly placed
on Poe's X-wing enables Agent Terex, a vicious First
Order intelligence officer, to follow Black Squadron.
Terex has trapped Poe and BB-8 in a cavern beneath
the surface, while a fleet of TIEs engage the rest of
Black Squadron in a deadly aerial battle....

Terex continues his interrogation of Dameron, but Dameron refuses to reveal the information. Above ground, Black Squadron attempts to escape while the TIE fighters fires on them. They fly down into the canyons.

Underground, the egg hatches in a blinding white light. A winged creature emerges, but instead of responding to the Crèche elder's request for salvation, it hits her with its wing. Dameron pretends to try to punch Terex, but instead steals his blaster.

In the canyons, Jessika Pava manages to destroy a few TIE fighters by collapsing an arch on them, but her fighter gets damaged by two others. Wexley orders Black Squadron to fly back out of the canyons.

Underground, stormtroopers fires on the creature, but are unable to injure it. It reaches down and attempts to eat the elder, but is stopped by a darker member of the same species. The two wrestles while Terex knocks the blaster out of Dameron's hand and realizes that the Crèche have information Dameron needs. The two creatures grow in size, breaking through the rock ceiling and knocking down rubble that crushes the stormtroopers. While Terex is distracted, BB-8 electrocutes him.

The creatures interrupt the fight between Black Squadron and the TIE fighters, and Black Squadron flies down through the hole. The darker creature breathes a beam of red energy that pierces the lighter creature, killing it.

The Crèche takes the blasters and force Terex and the remaining stormtroopers to surrender. The elder realizes the surviving creature is the actual savior, and it flies away with the Crèche on its back. Black Squadron leaves, calling the First Order cruiser to pick up Terex as they depart. The squadron follows their next lead on Lor San Tekka.
