"It's no wonder that Pons Limbic, a Siniteen who frequented the Mos Eisley cantina, was nicknamed 'Brainiac.'"
―An entry in an artist's journal restored and expanded by the Graf Archive[3]

Pons Limbic, nicknamed "Brainiac," was a Siniteen who specialized in calculating the coordinates for hyperspace jumps in his head. He frequented Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina on the planet Tatooine and sat inside with fellow patrons Hem Dazon, Bom Vimdin, Arleil Schous, and Braconnor Bakiska when the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and the former moisture farmer Luke Skywalker entered the establishment in 0 BBY. He was later present in the cantina again in 0 ABY when the bounty hunter Boba Fett entered, searching for information on Skywalker's identity.

Biography[]

Limbic-Vimdin-SW5

Pons Limbic frequented Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina.

Pons Limbic was a Siniteen who was nicknamed "Brainiac" for his ability to mentally calculate hyperspace jumps.[1] He frequented[3] Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina in the Mos Eisley spaceport on the planet Tatooine,[4] and in 0 BBY,[5] sat at a table in one of the cantina's backrooms[4] with a group of other patrons consisting of the Arcona Hem Dazon, the Advozse Bom Vimdin, the Defel Arleil Schous, and the Stennes Shifter Braconnor Bakiska.[1] He was busy refreshing himself[6] at the table when the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and the local moisture farmer Luke Skywalker entered in search of a pilot to take them to the planet Alderaan.[2]

Limbic and Vimdin were both present in the cantina again after the Battle of Yavin[7] in 0 ABY[8] when the bounty hunter Boba Fett arrived in the establishment seeking information on the identity of Skywalker. Standing together in a crowd of patrons that Fett questioned, the pair remained silent. Eventually, another patron challenged the bounty hunter, but Fett bested the patron before receiving the information he sought by interrogating a human who tried to flee the bar.[7] Limbic was later mentioned in an artist's journal, which was restored, expanded, and displayed by the Graf Archive[3] at some point after 34 ABY.[9]

Personality and traits[]

Limbic had yellow eyes and pale skin.[2] He possessed an enormous brain that was capable of wonders.[6]

Skills and abilities[]

Calculating hyperspace coordinates was one of Limbic's specialties, which made him an invaluable starship crew member. He was exceptionally intelligent and above average speed, with average strength, diplomatic skills, and fighting ability. He was not Force-sensitive.[6]

Equipment[]

While at the cantina, Limbic wore a green tunic and a black scarf.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

PonsLimbicMask-Chronicles

Pons Limbic's mask was created by Rick Baker's team.

Pons Limbic first appeared in the original trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope,[2] which was released on May 25, 1977.[10] The character was sketched by creature designer Rick Baker who then roughed out a sculpt that was finished by Rob Bottin. Limbic's costume was reused from a[11] 1942[12] serial called Spy Smasher. Limbic was filmed[11] in supplemental footage shot in post-production[13] on a sound stage in Dovington's Hollywood studio between January 24 and 25, 1977.[14]

During production of A New Hope, the character was referred to as "Brainee," "Cranium Head," and "Crater Head."[15] In the current Star Wars canon, the character's name was first used in the 2015 reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.[16] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the character was initially identified as "Brainiac" in the 1996 "A New Hope Limited" supplement for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game by Decipher, Inc.[17] This was then revealed to be an in-universe nickname when the character's full name of Pons Limbic was established in the article "Cantina Roll-Call: Shedding Light on Some Alien Aliases" when it was updated for the 2008 StarWars.com site redesign.[18][15] The limbic system and pons are both parts of the real-life human brain.[19]

Vision-Cantina

Pons Limbic appeared in the cantina in the animated short film "Tatooine Rhapsody."

Limbic appears in "Tatooine Rhapsody," an ambiguously canon short film in the Star Wars: Visions series[20] released on September 22, 2021.[21] In the film, Limbic is shown in the Mos Eisley cantina talking to[20] Nabrun Leids[1] while other patrons watch a performance by the band Star Waver on handheld viewscreens. In addition to his green tunic[20] from A New Hope,[2] Limbic is shown wearing gray pants and brown boots,[20] which matches a Legends action figure of Limbic made by Hasbro Inc. for their Legacy Collection line in 2008.[22]
