The Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser,[1] or simply the Praetor-class battlecruiser,[2] was a model of battlecruiser.[1] It shared a similar name to the Praetor II-class used by the Imperial Navy.[3] Prior to the Battle of Hoth[2] in 3 ABY,[4] one derelict Praetor-class had its reactor stolen by members of the Rebel Alliance to power a giant ion cannon in their Echo Base on the planet Hoth.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Introduction to canon[]

The Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in Star Wars: Complete Locations, a 2016 reference book.[1] It was first identified as the Praetor-class battlecruiser in the 2021 reference book Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy.[2]

Legends origins[]

Inside-the-worlds-of-star-wars

The Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser originated in Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy.

The battlecruiser's mention in Star Wars: Complete Locations was part of material reprinted from[1] the 2004 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy, written by James Luceno. This marked the first mention of the Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser in the Star Wars Legends continuity.[5]

It was first identified as the Praetor-class battle cruiser in the 2008 reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia[6] and was further identified as the Praetor-class battlecruiser in Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart's 2012 reference book, The Essential Guide to Warfare, which also designated the starship Battalion as a Praetor.[7] Thus, the book retroactively established the 1998 roleplaying supplement Tatooine Manhunt, released for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, in which the Battalion was first mentioned, as the Praetor class' first, albeit indirect, mention.[8]
