R-3PO,[7] also known as "R-3," was a 3PO-series protocol droid with distinctive deep red plating, bright yellow “eye” sensors,[2] and a moody attitude. During the Galactic Civil War, it served the Alliance to Restore the Republic[3] and Alliance High Command[6] in their fight against the Galactic Empire, and when the Alliance established Echo Base on the planet Hoth, R-3PO was tasked with keeping a lookout for spies[7] and Imperial spy droids[6] within the base.[7] The droid was present for the Battle of Hoth, which the Alliance lost, forcing them to evacuate Echo Base.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- "Woe is me! A Squadron of our most mediocre Rebels has not returned, and Zev is most upset! I share in his anguish! I hope he brings them back safely. Oh the melancholia!"

R-3PO was a background character in The Empire Strikes Back, where he is in Echo Base shortly before the Battle of Hoth.[3] He also appears in the non-canon video game LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in which he has been reprogrammed as a droid serving the First Order.[9] His name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity via the Star Wars Customizable Card Game,[10] and was brought into the new canon via Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.[7] R-3PO was portrayed by Chris Parsons[11]
