R1-type shopkeeping drones[1] were R1-series astromech droids modified[3] by Jawas,[1] a species native to the planet Tatooine,[5] to assist with shopkeeping. Created from[3] an older model of astromech droid[7] manufactured by Industrial Automaton,[2] they featured black plating, a red photoreceptor, and a grasping arm.[4] Among the improvised equipment that could be found in his shop[3] in Tatooine's port city of Mos Espa, the Toydarian junk dealer Watto owned an R1-type shopkeeping drone that handled most of the routine business operations of his parts dealership.[5] The droid's dome was marked with a handprint, and it was pictured in a HoloNews advertisement for Watto's shop as an example of the droids available at the dealership.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
The R1-type shopkeeping drone first appeared in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.[4] It was first identified in Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, a 2000 Star Wars Legends reference book written by Kristin Lund and illustrated by Richard Chasemore and Hans Jenssen.[8] This name was confirmed to be canon by the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars.[5]
