The Rakata were, according to legend, an amphibious humanoid species native to the planet Lehon, and were the first to develop hyperspace travel. Stories also told that the species eventually became extinct as a result of corruption from the dark side of the Force.[1] The species shared its name with the historical Rakatan Infinite Empire,[2] the mystical antiquities known as Rakatan wraith boxes[3] and their homeworld, Rakata Prime, also known as Lehon.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Rakata were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the forty-seventh issue of the De Agostini magazine Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon,[1] published around November 25, 2015.[4] The species originated in Star Wars Legends in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The Rakata in that game were the fallen remnant of what had once been a galaxy-spanning empire that conquered, ruled, and decimated other species through the dark side of the Force. The Force powered the Rakatans' hyperspace technology.[5]

In the forty-eighth issue of the 2015 comic book series Star Wars, written by Kieron Gillen, penciled by Salvador Larroca, and published by Marvel Comics[6] on May 23, 2018,[7] an unidentified Mon Calamari from the script[8] was mistakenly depicted as a member of the Rakata species.[6]
