- "It's a Kuati Signet. Blue kyber. Sky stone. The ancient world. Celebrates the uprising against the Rakatan invaders."
- ―Luthen Rael, to Cassian Jeron Andor
The Rakatans,[3] also known as the Rakata,[1] were an ancient amphibious humanoid species native to the planet Lehon, and were, according to legend, the first to develop hyperspace travel.[1] At some point in ancient galactic history, the Rakatans staged an invasion, but were repelled by an uprising. A Kuati Signet embedded with a blue kyber crystal commemorated the uprising.[2] The Rakatan species was said to have eventually gone extinct as a result of corruption from the dark side of the Force.[1] The species shared its name with the historical Rakatan Infinite Empire[4] and the mystical antiquities known as Rakatan wraith boxes.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
Canon and origins[]
The Rakatans were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the forty-seventh issue of the De Agostini magazine Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon,[1] published around November 25, 2015.[6] The species originated in Star Wars Legends in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The Rakata in that game were the fallen remnant of what had once been a galaxy-spanning empire that conquered, ruled, and decimated other species through the dark side of the Force. The Force powered the Rakatans' hyperspace technology.[7]
Inconsistencies[]
Star Wars series[]
- "What a time for a light failure..."
- ―Unidentified Mon Calamari
In the forty-eighth issue of the 2015 comic book series Star Wars, written by Kieron Gillen, penciled by Salvador Larroca, and published by Marvel Comics[8] on May 23, 2018,[9] an unidentified Mon Calamari from the script[10] was mistakenly depicted as a member of the Rakatan species.[8]
Poe Dameron series[]
- "I don't even remember that dude"
- ―Matt Martin
Likewise, in the seventh issue of the 2016 comic book series Star Wars: Poe Dameron, written by Charles Soule, penciled by Angel Unzueta, and published by Marvel Comics[12] on October 26, 2016,[13] an unidentified "thug"[12] who was dubbed "generic alien extra #3457" and described as "mysterious background guy" by Story Group's Matt Martin on Twitter,[11] was also depicted resembling the Rakatans,[12] but their species remained unspecified.[11]
