Red Squadron, also known as Red Wing or Red Group, was the designation of a Galactic Republic starfighter squadron active across millennia, participating in the Jedi Civil War, the Stark Hyperspace War, and the Clone Wars.
Organization[]
The Old Republic[]
The Jedi Civil War-era[12] Red Squadron was assigned to Galactic Republic Admiral Forn Dodonna, and was equipped with Aurek-class tactical strikefighters and S-250 Chela-class starfighters.[1]
Years later, Red Wing participated in the Battle of Telos IV at the command of Admiral Carth Onasi, alongside Blue Wing, where it fought against the Sith forces of Darth Nihilus.[12]
Rise of the Empire[]
During the Stark Hyperspace War and early Clone Wars, prior to the development of clone trooper-oriented V-19 Torrent starfighters, Red Squadron consisted entirely of Jedi pilots, flying A-6 Interceptors and later, Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptors.[7][2] Following the clones' integration into the squadron, command was held alternatively by a Jedi, such as Plo Koon,[3] or a clone trooper pilot.[4]
As clones began to fill the ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Z-95 Headhunter starfighters (developed just prior to the outbreak of the war) were assigned to Red Squadron's clone pilots.
Red Squadron was also outfitted with a flight of BTL-B Y-wing starfighters bearing red markings, augmenting the V-19s that they fielded.[13]
After the development of the ARC-170 starfighter, Red Squadron was among the units in the Republic fleet to receive ARC-170s for combat. Red Squadron piloting these new ships preferred their craft to be balanced more in favor of shields than firepower when compared to their comrades in Blue Squadron, making them valuable for penetration runs.
History[]
Before the Clone Wars[]
At the Battle of Rakata Prime, the climactic battle of the Jedi Civil War,[11] Red Squadron fought with Admiral Forn Dodonna's fleet. During the confrontation, the squadron reinforced the breach in the Sith battle lines created by Green Squadron, further paving the way for Dodonna's capital ships to assault the ancient Rakata space station the Star Forge.[1] Years later, Admiral Carth Onasi directed Red Wing to engage the starfighter forces of the Sith Lord Darth Nihilus in defense of Citadel Station.[12]
The Jedi-piloted A-6 Interceptors[7] of Red Squadron saw action during the Stark Hyperspace War in 44 BBY, launching with other Republic-aligned squadrons from Trade Federation freighters into battle against the Stark Commercial Combine at the Fifth Battle of Qotile. Along with Blue Squadron, Red Squadron was led by the ace pilot, Jedi Master Saesee Tiin.[6]
Clone Wars[]
- "Red Squadron, engage transports from orbit."
- ―Obi-Wan Kenobi at the Battle of Kamino
Early in the Clone Wars, Red Squadron's Jedi adopted Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptors, and were commanded by Jedi General Tsui Choi, with his support, Aayla Secura, who led their flight against Confederate droid starfighters at the Battle of Kamino, while Blue Squadron Leader General Obi-Wan Kenobi's group targeted enemy transports.[2]
Later in the war, Red Squadron was under the command of Jedi Master Plo Koon. With fellow Jedi Adi Gallia's Blue Squadron, Koon led his V-19 Torrent squadron from a Delta-7 interceptor, defending a diplomatic cruiser carrying Senator Bail Organa from pirate attack ships.[3]
During the Battle of Malastare, a Red Squadron Y-wing bomber that was equipped with a prototype weapon known as an electro-proton bomb. Piloted by squadron leader[4] Goji and clone gunner Rod, it flew in formation with Y-wings against the Separatist Droid Army. Goji successfully released the bomb on target which created a massive electromagnetic pulse, deactivating or destroying all the droid forces gathered on Malastare.[8]
Flying the YT-2400 light freighter Star Runner with the Wookiee Chewbacca, Jedi Master Mavra Zane led a Red Squadron, also called Red Group, of Delta-7 interceptor pilots—including two of her own Padawan apprentices—in pursuit of Separatist leader Shu Mai over Felucia. Destroying a Droid Control Ship and clearing a path for Master Yoda's fleet, Red Squadron followed Mai's dreadnaught, Subjugator, to Coruscant, where she plotted to attack the Galactic Senate with the biological weapon Trihexalon. Cutting through Subjugator's screen of vulture droids, and losing "Red Four" to an enemy heavy fighter, the squadron kept turret fire off of the Delta-7s of Gold Group as they disabled the captial ship's shield generators, allowing Red Squadron to enter the Trihexalon deployment system in an attack run on the ship's reactor core, destroying the Subjugator and foiling the plot.[5]
The Destruction of Red Squadron[]
During the recapture of Tythe, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi led Red Squadron through the Separatist fleet on a mission to capture Count Dooku alive. Initially managing to destroy a Techno Union battle cruiser on the way, the squadron, nonetheless, was destroyed by defending hailfire droids, STAPs, and battle droids once they reached the lower atmosphere of Tythe.
Behind the scenes[]
While Adi Gallia's entry in StarWars.com's Databank refers to her as the leader of Red Squadron during Bail Organa's rescue from pirates,[14] the comic issue Republic 61, the original source, portrays Plo Koon as Red Squadron's leader, with Gallia commanding Blue Squadron.[3]
