The Republic crest,[1] also referred to as the Republic cog[2] or the Galactic Republic symbol,[3] was the ancient eight-spoked sigil of the Galactic Republic.[1] The symbol dated back to the Bendu monks' study of numerology, in which the number nine—symbolized by eight spokes joined to one disk—signified the[4] benevolent[5] presence of the Force in a united galaxy.[4] The symbol of the Republic was a common sight in society, used for both civilian and military purposes.[3] With the outbreak of the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the crest came to be featured more prominently than before, appearing on brand new war machines, flags, and banners.[1] The entry hatchways to the Republic escape pods aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer Triumphant had the Republic Crest on them.[2] Eventually, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine turned the Republic into the First Galactic Empire,[1] and the Republic crest was modified into the Imperial crest.[6]
