- ―Dengar
Rimmer was a phrase used to refer to someone who hailed from the Rim, the most rimward regions of the galaxy, namely the Expansion Region, the Mid Rim, the Outer Rim, the Wild Space and the Unknown Regions. The term of Rim was commonly used in opposition to the Core that included the Core Worlds, the Colonies and the Inner Rim.[2]
The distinction between the Core and the Rim originated the most ancient times of the Galactic Republic, when the Republic space encompassed an area similar to the Greater Core while the rest of the galaxy was already known as the Rim.[2] Hence, inhabitants of the Core often considered themselves superior and more civilized than the Rimmers.[2][3] During the Imperial Period, few Rimmers had an opportunity of good education such as in the Academy of Carida. Cadet Nathan Donar III used to call Kyle Katarn "Rimmer" as a nickname, which annoyed him.[3]
The term was used in the Rimmer's Rest cantina on Nar Shaddaa, Rimmer's Alley on Sulon,[4] and the song Rimmer's Delight.[3]
