- "It appears anything goes out there."
- ―Tech observes Riot Racing
Riot Racing was a sport practiced on the planet of Serolonis[2] which required fast-reaction time and excellent piloting skills. The renegade clone trooper Tech once participated in a race after the racer TAY-0—who was under the information broker Ciddarin Scaleback's employ—was abruptly destroyed.[1]
Description[]
Riot Racing was fairly absent of rules. Racers would mount laser cannons on their speeders to shoot other racers off of the track or destroy them. Many would, in turn, fortify their speeders with shields to prevent that from happening, and heavily modify their speeders for added maneuverability and speed. Shooting speeders down was so common that the Safa Toma Speedway authorities issued a standard warning that they were not liable for the spectators' disintegration, injury, or death; indeed some fans were even killed during the races due to laser fire.[1]
In addition to the armed speeders, tracks like the Safa Toma Speedway were equipped with dangerous obstacles which would activate from the floors or ceiling to cause speeders to crash on them. These included automatic walls and electric arcs. Beyond that, the race functions were seemingly normal; racers would cross the finish line first to win.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Riot Racing appeared in "Faster,"[1] the fourth episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch's second season, which premiered on Disney+ on January 18, 2023.[3] The episode's original pitch called for the story featuring podracing, but as the story evolved, it was decided to change the sport to a newly-created one, resulting in Riot Racing's creation. However, the Riot Racing's inspiration on podracing remains clear even though the former sport has fewer rules and restriction than the latter.[4]
