The film, set for release on December 16, 2016, will be directed by Gareth Edwards. A first draft was written by Gary Whitta,[1] and Chris Weitz took over scripting duties in 2015.[2] Academy Award-nominated actress Felicity Jones will be one of the stars of the film.[3]

Development

The film was first announced on May 22, 2014, with Gareth Edwards attached as director and Gary Whitta as writer.[1] By January 9, 2015, Whitta had left the project after completing a first draft of the screenplay.[4] On January 26, 2015, it was announced that Oscar-nominated writer Chris Weitz had been hired to replace Whitta.[2] The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger announced the film's title, Rogue One, on March 12, 2015.[5]
