The sand fly (also spelled as sandfly or sand-fly) was a species of insect found on the planet Tatooine[3] that buzzed around and disturbed banthas.[1] Sand flies occasionally sat on moisture vaporators.[3] On Tatooine, sandflies were commonly found in the cracked eaves of pourstone buildings in the town of Anchorhead. They could also be found inside desert caves on that planet.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
The 1991 Star Wars video game manual called the insects in the game "Flying Insectoids", but a guide to the game in an issue of Nintendo Power magazine used the term "Sand Flies."[4] The sand fly was later mentioned in R. A. Salvatore's 1999 novel, The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime. It was again mentioned in the 2011 novel The Old Republic: Deceived and Riptide, both written by Paul S. Kemp.
