A Sapith crystal.
Sapith was a type of crystal occasionally used in lightsaber construction. The crystal was excreted by the now extinct volice worm, a creature from the Ssi-ruuvi homeworld Lwhekk, once every eleven standard years. After the worm's extinction, the only way to find sapith was to excavate it from a fossilized volice. These crystals were shaped like serpent scales, with a complex internal structure.[1]
When set in a lightsaber's crystal chamber, sapith generated an intense blade, easier to control than most other blades.[2]
