"I learned to love the Silver Sea."
―Mon Mothma[2]

The Silver Sea was a large body of water on the planet of Chandrila. The planet's capital, Hanna City, was located along its shores, and its harbor was home to thousands of fishing ships. Multiple reefs were located in the sea, which pilot Gavin Darklighter enjoyed visiting while diving. The New Republic's leader, Mon Mothma, grew up in Hanna and retained fond memories of the Silver Sea long after she left.

The Silver Sea and Hanna City

The Silver Sea was a body of water with rippling banks along which lay Hanna City,[1] the capital city of the Core Worlds planet Chandrila, as well as Hanna's metropolitan area, which ran along the sea for thirty-six kilometers, eighteen of which were the city's downtown area.[3] The sea contained multiple reefs that teemed with life,[4] including a spectacular reef located just offshore.[1] The Jhanjaari River flowed into the Silver Sea from the nearby Lake Sah'ot, which was separated from the sea by a gentle slope.[3] Balmgrass and bristing grew along the seashore, which was also inhabited by squalls and fecklens.[5]

History[]

"I find that making my home over in the image of where I lived in better times is good for my sanity."
―Mon Mothma explains why her quarters are decorated like her seaside home[2]

Mon Mothma grew up near the Silver Sea.

Hanna City was originally established as a fishing village that made use of the Silver Sea. By the Imperial Period, thousands of fishing trawlers were based in the city's harbor, which was located in the midst of beaches, reef diving piers, and wharves on Hanna's seaside.[3] Mon Mothma, leader of the New Republic, grew up in Hanna City and, over time, became fond of the Silver Sea.[2] In 7 ABY,[6] New Republic Admiral Gial Ackbar complimented the ocean-themed decor in Mothma's quarters and asked for confirmation that Mothma had grown up in a Chandrilan port city. Mothma confirmed that she had, described her feelings about the sea, and stated that she had designed her current residence to resemble her home.[2]

By 25 ABY,[7] New Republic pilot Gavin Darklighter had come to love diving on Chandrila with his wife and was especially fond of the life that teemed in the Silver Sea's reefs.[4] The ranch occupied by General Wedge Antilles during the Yuuzhan Vong War was within sight of the Silver Sea, which gleamed with sunlight when it was visited by the Jedi Kyp Durron and Jaina Solo.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

The Silver Sea was first mentioned in the 1998 reference book The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons, written by Daniel Wallace.[8] It made its first appearance in Greg Keyes' 2001 novel The New Jedi Order: Edge of Victory II: Rebirth, the second book in the Edge of Victory Duology and ninth overall in the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order series.[5]
