- "I'm Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo of the Chiss Ascendancy. This is the Springhawk, Picket Force Two command vessel of the Expansionary Defense Fleet."
- ―Force Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo
The Springhawk was a Chiss assault cruiser serving with Picket Force Two of the Chiss Ascendancy's Expansionary Fleet. It served as the personal flagship of Force Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo, core name "Thrawn".
Description[]
Armament[]
Armed with missile batteries and the typical blue-beamed Chiss masers, the ship packed a powerful punch for a ship of her size. The missile launchers could also be used to deploy large shock nets, which could disable target vessels. A precisely-tuned hyperdrive enabled her to make tactical microjumps, and a powerful communications array allowed her to deploy electronic warfare techniques that could confound far more heavily-armed enemies. Commander Thrawn utilized its full power against the Vagaari, including acquiring a gravity-well projector during the battle of Geroon.[1]
Design and construction[]
Although little bigger than[1] a 115 meter[2] Republic cruiser, the Springhawk was nevertheless the command ship for the Expansionary Fleet in the area of frontier space around Crustai.[1]
The bridge of the Springhawk featured navigation and sensor stations, various displays and status boards, with a command chair in the center. An armory was located below the bridge with a stash of armored Chiss combat suits with self-sealant capabilities. A small and simple room, that was referred to as conference room or duty crew meal room by the Corellian smuggler Jorj Car'das was located inside the ship. Its furnishings consisted of a table and half a dozen chairs. Five meters down the corridor from the conference room, a resting area with personal quarters was located.[1]
Aside from the bridge and the armory, there were several crewed forward visual triangulation sites on the ship in order to track enemy vessels and coordinate the firing of weaponry during combat, which included the Forward Visual Triangulation Site Number One. The efforts of these Chiss warriors augmented the ship's existing sensor systems, and sometimes provided a more reliable description of a battle.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The Springhawk first appeared in Timothy Zahn's 2006 novel Outbound Flight.[1] The 2012 reference book The Essential Reader's Companion includes an illustration by Chris Trevas of the scene from Outbound Flight in which Kinman Doriana is beside Mitth'raw'nuruodo as the latter is being telekinetically choked by Jorus C'baoth. The setting of the illustration is the bridge[3] of a Trade Federation battleship.[4] Although Mitth'raw'nuruodo and Doriana both do visit the bridge of such a vessel during the events of Outbound Flight, during the aforementioned scene the pair is aboard the bridge of the Springhawk instead.[1]
